Fiona Hyslop, the Cabinet Secretary for Culture, Tourism and External Affairs came to visit us on Thursday the 16th of May as part of Mental Health Awareness Week. Fiona had a tour around Delta with Director Craig McKechnie before heading into the teaching studio to meet some of our artists. Fiona was then whisked upstairs to the exhibition space to see Delta's latest exhibition, 'come dine with us' from our young artists before seeing a little presentation we had made about the history and development of Delta.
Fiona agreed that art is very important in local communities and great for everyone's health and well being. Check out the video Fiona made while she was here.
A big thank you to Gregg McNeill of Dark Box Images who was our official photographer for the visit. He managed to capture some fantastic shots and we look forward to seeing more of his work when he moves into Studio 2 next month.
We have two exhibitions opening on Saturday the 16th of June from 11am-4pm. One of the exhibitions is called 'Salvador Dali is not my dad' and will showcase work from 3 artists - Tony Porter, Mervyn Hutton and Graeme Hetherington. The second exhibition is from our Studio 5 artists who attend adult classes throughout the week.
We will be hanging both exhibitions over the next few weeks and can already tell that the gallery is going to look cracking once everything is up. Please join us on Saturday the 16th of June and enjoy a glass of wine and a wander through Delta. The exhibition will run from the 18th of June to the 6th of July, Monday - Sunday 10am-3pm. We look forward to seeing you there! We will be running an Easter Art Week this year for children aged 7-13 years. This is always a great week filled with creativity, laughter and fun! At the end of the week, we present all of the artwork in a mini exhibition for parents to see!
The summer holidays began at Delta with our Summer Art Week where 25 children had the chance to give the gallery walls a makeover. The children brainstormed and came up with ideas for a magical world where life, colour and creativity played the biggest part. Each child had their own section of the wall to make something unique...and they created the most beautiful artwork. Vibrant trees, tents and structures grew out of nowhere to fill the walls before handmade flowers, animals and birds were added to bring it to life! During the week we also took a trip down to the river to draw inspiration from the natural world around us and thankfully the rain let up for an afternoon so we could head down there and have some fun while it stayed dry! We also celebrated two birthdays during the week, Megan who turned 12 and Noah who turned 11!!! Megan told us that it was, 'THE BEST BIRTHDAY EVER!' as she got to paint, play her new ukulele and eat cake...what more can you ask for! Parents had been banished from the exhibition space all week so they were desperate to get in and see what the children had been getting up to! After the parents had gathered, each child came in to the gallery to an applause and then showed off their work to family and friends. We are now coming to the end of the holidays and our young artists classes will resume on a Tuesday/Wednesday evening for teenagers and Saturday/Sunday for primary age children. We are looking forward to getting back and only have 4 short weeks to prepare for the annual children's exhibition which will open on September the 29th. This exhibition is always our most colourful show, please come along and join us for either the opening or a quiet look in October.
